Do you have a water meter?


There are two types of water accounts in Chicago:


1. Non-Metered Accounts
  • Billed every 6 months
  • Mostly single-family homes and 2 or 3 flats
  • Can volunteer for a meter at any time

2. Metered Accounts
  • Billed every 1- 2 months depending on the account
  • Mostly multi unit, commercial, industrial, wholesale, and new construction
  • Have a water meter installed on the property
  • Meters read either in gallons (for new Automatic Meter Reading units) or cubic feet


If you can't remember how often you get your bill, check the upper right hand corner of your most recent bill. Either the words "non-metered account" or "metered account" will be in bold font on your statement.
